Welcome delegates to the 1999 South Kingstown High School Model United Nations. My name is Meghan Shaughnessy and I am the chair of the Rose Security Council. I love participating in Model UN’s. I find Model UN’s very enriching because of their ability to help one better understand the world in which we live. I have participated in South Kingstown’s Model United Nations since I was a freshman and I also attended the Lexington Model UN and St. John’s High School Model UN. I am also an editor of SKHS’s yearbook and President of the National Honor Society here at South Kingstown. I will attend Wellesley College next year and I plan to major in biology with either a double major or a minor in history or International Relations.
This background paper will give you an introduction to the issue of Terrorism in the Middle East. In addition to myself, Josh Honeyman, Richard Honhart, Sunil Kothari, Micah Nickerson and Meredith Reece wrote the paper. I encourage you to read the background paper and to do some research on your own. Terrorism is a topic which has significance for all nations as recent world events have shown, and I feel that this is going to make an interesting debate. I am confident that this Security Council will have much success.
My assistant chair will be Micah Nickerson, a senior at SKHS. Micah has been involved with Model UN’s here at South Kingstown since he was a freshman. Additionally, Micah is very involved with the SKHS Drama Club. Micah has a flare for debating and I am confident that he will do an excellent job as an assistant chair.
