Hello delegates, and welcome to the 9th annual South Kingstown Model Johns Model United Nations, debating Security Council reform and landmines. Most recently, I attended the Brown University Simulation of the United Nations. I represented Sudan on a Middle East Summit discussing the Arab-Israeli peace process, prevention of future Iraqi aggression, and threats to governments from Islamic fundamentalists. In my International Relations class, I primarily represent Palestine. I have also had the opportunity to travel to India and throughout Europe which has given me a better political, social, and cultural understanding of the world. I hope to continue my study of International Relations in college.
I encourage all of you to participate as much as possible as it will add to your SKMUN experience. Regardless of how meaningless you feel your countrys opinion is, dont be afraid to step forward and express your views. The more information you know I feel that Model United Nations are extremely rewarding, and I would like about your nation, the better you can represent it. Try to spend some time getting acquainted with your countrys general policies, and read this background paper for a general overview of the topic of terrorism. I would also like to acknowledge all of the people who contributed to this background paper Rich Honhart, Josh Honeyman, Meghan Shaughnessy, Meredith Reece, and Micah Nickerson.
If you have any comments, questions, or suggestions regarding either the Security Council committee or the SKMUN, please feel free to call me or Rich Honhart, the assistant chair. Rich has also been active in Model United Nations. This will be his third SKMUN, and he also participated in the 1998 St. Johns MUN.
I am looking forward to chairing this committee on terrorism since it is such a major issue these days. With the frequently unstable Middle East peace process and the growing situation in Northern Ireland, the topic of terrorism has become one of significant importance worldwide. Once again, I urge all of you to have a good understanding of the background of terrorism, in addition to your countrys policies. But, most importantly, dont feel intimidated to speak and just try to have fun!
