General Assembly Resolution 53/12
Committee: Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee
Topic: Starvation in the Sudan
The General Assembly,
Noting with regret that the civil war in Sudan has already cost
the lives of over 1 million Sudanis, displaced 1.5 million Sudanis and put 3 million Sudanis in dire need of emergency food assistance,
Further noting the Sudani government's apparent disrespect for the human rights of its citizens, especially the rights of all Sudani women and the rights of people of southern Sudan through the imposition of the Sharia,
Realizing that the Sudani civil war has spilled over beyond Sudan's borders resulting in increased friction between Sudan and its neighbors,
especially with Ethiopia, Uganda and Eritrea,
Firmly convinced that the nations bordering Sudan must be assisted in supporting Sudani refugees (28.000 Sudanis fled the country in one week in 1993), in defending themselves against Sudani aggression, and in supporting Sudani freedom fighters,
1. Calls upon the international community to increase economic and military aid to the governments of Ethiopia, Uganda and Eritrea;
2. Trusts that the aforementioned nations would devote 50% of the military aid they receive to military support for Sudani rebels;
3. Calls on the UN High Commisioner for Refugees to enact programs in countries bordering Sudan to support Sudani refugees who have fled the atrocities in Sudan;
4. Recommends that the nations of Europe to give Sudani refugees asylum in their countries, such that any Sudani arriving in a European country would be considered a political refugee, and therefore would not be returned to Sudan;
5. Urges the Security Council to continue trade sanctions on Sudan
